Heritage Weekend 2022 is around the corner and for the first time in a couple of years, we can breathe the fresh air and enjoy each other’s company. Events which had been placed on hold are now on the cards and it’s for us to take advantage of every moment.

Africa Aerospace Defence Airshow: 24 & 25 September

Venue: Waterkloof Airforce Base, Centurion, Pretoria

Cost: R100 – R200

There has always been a fascination to look up into the skies and see aircraft do barrel rolls or fly in formation… the airshow at Centurion this weekend is an absolute must!

How to get there from Rosebank: The Gautrain has a station at Centurion, then take a Bolt or Uber as the Gautrain buses do not operate on a weekend. The Gautrain station is situated approximately 5 minutes away from the Jack Rose Hotel

Linden Fresh Produce Market: 24 & 25 September

Venue: Botanical Gardens, Emmarentia Dam

Craft is the name of the game with over 150 stall-holders displaying their wares. Expanding the craft focus even further, craft beers and drinks also fall into the ambit of the market. In addition a variety of food vendors will be present with an array of choice from tacos to paella, bao buns to Argentinian grill. Live music is also on the cards.

 

Heritage Day Beer Fest: 23 – 25 September

If you’re looking for live music performances, then Montecasino (Fourways) is the place to visit this weekend. The line-up includes: Just Jinjer, Brent Harris & Thee Jam, Clint Cunningham and Nick Rush and The Bullys.

In addition there’s the clash between South Africa and Argentina which will be screened live.

 

Heritage Foundation: Programme for Heritage Weekend

This an opportunity of a lifetime, especially for visitors to our iconic city. Saturday and Sunday’s  tours depart from Holy Family College 40 Oxford Road.  You will be taken to South Africa’s highest building –  The Leonardo in Sandton, for a view which encompasses the Magaliesberg Mountains to the west; The Voortrekker Monument (north) and the CBD (south). In addition, you will be introduced to the architecture indelibly stamped by Sir Herbert Baker in Parktown.

Then you will travel to Diagonal Street in the CBD with shopfronts which date back to Victorian times. Thereafter, it will be a visit to Fordsburg and Noordgesig where a special treat is in store. 

 

Soweto Heritage Festival

Venue: Soweto Theatre

Entrance: Free

Celebrating Heritage weekend, the  Soweto Theatre is relaunching it’s Jabulani Amphitheatre by hosting a Traditional Dance Competition. This will be accompanied by a variety of musical genres which are intrinsically South African, such as maskanda, marabi, mbaqanga and isicathamiya.

Last but not least, if you enjoy live jazz performances be sure to visit Doppio Zero in Rosebank where the Amaeshi IkechiQuartet will be performing on Friday night.

Musical premiere

A treat is also in store at the Johannesburg Theatre this Heritage weekend is the premiere of Gregory Maqoma’s Third World Express– an original musical featuring the Vuyani Dance Company. This is definitely not to be missed! I had the opportunity to attend performance of Cion – an experience never to be forgotten as the rendition was world class.
