We have often been asked about the origins of our name, The Jack Rose … here is the answer.
Being situated in the heart of Rosebank, there was never any doubt that the word ‘rose’ had to be included in the naming of the hotel. In addition, the land was originally a portion of Rosemill Orchards…and, although roses are not indigenous to the area, our gardens are filled with blooms as is the entire suburb.

- The Jack Rose is also a species of rose with an extremely pungent aroma. It originated in France in 1853 and is one of the earliest rose hybrids. Created by an amateur gardener, Roussel, the rose which is known for its fragrance, large flowers and bright colours (reds to deep purple) was named after General Jacqueminot (a General in the Napoleonic wars). Allegedly, this exhibition rose was ‘listed among the roses of the Botanical garden in Cape Town only five years after its introduction in France – as was the most commonly cultivated red variety worldwide for about 50 years’.
